Take a brain dump!

Vocational ministry can be quite overwhelming at times, especially on top of family responsibilities and scheduling. This exercise is quite relieving, at least it was for me. I can’t promise it will make everything go away but perhaps make life a bit more enjoyable because you’re organized and your mind will be a little less… constipated.

Today amidst a busy schedule and to-dos that seemed to keep piling up I tried my hardest to collect and rationalize all my thoughts…but simply couldn’t, there was too much on my mind. What happened next was extremely satisfying. I took a brain dump.

  • Grab a stack of sticky notes and a pen.

  • Write down the first thing on your mind.

  • Take the next sticky note and write the next thing. Repeat, repeat, repeat.

  • Organize all sticky notes into 3 categories – work, home, personal.

  • Rank the sticky notes in each category and assign calendar due dates for each one.

When it was all said and done my brain had more than it could handle! I ended up with 62 post it notes in a matter of 15 minutes. Give it try!

Lead Small App: IT’S FREE!

October 6, 2014 by Chris Parker Leave a Comment

Give some love to those hardworking small group leaders, get this app in their hands ASAP! We (student pastors) have been waiting for something like this for years and now those over at Orange have gone and done it, they have created the  “Lead Small” app free for small group leaders to use. My leaders are using it every week!

  • Small Group Questions? Check.
  • Database for all my students info and prayer requests? Check.
  • One click to send a text to everyone in my small group? Check.
  • Additional training to make me a better leader? Check.

I use the app during every SGL meeting to review the topic for the day and the small group questions. This thing is synced with our curriculum months in advance, it’s a time saver and super clear on what the SGL needs to do.

Churches have the option to subscribe for a small fee to customize and make content and newsfeed their own. Even if your small group leaders simply use this as database to keep in touch with their few and their parents, this thing is a game changer! Go download it and geek out with me on what we’ve all been waiting for!

All is NOT lost.

September 18, 2014 by Chris Parker Leave a Comment

allislostWith me growing up around sailboats and loving survival skills, I think Robert Redford did an excellent job with All is Lost. Composed of just a few sentences and hardly any soundtrack, this very real, jaw dropping thriller will make you feel isolated and hopeless through it all.

There are too many times in student ministry we (youth pastors) feel this way about our ministry — isolated — hopeless.  If it weren’t already hard enough to sail a boat across the Indian Ocean, the guy just happens to hit a shipping container in the middle of nowhere! With what seems the already impossible task of running a stellar weekend program, having every leader/volunteer slot filled and ensuring every visiting student returns, the ominous adversary that is determined to sink your ministry comes unfairly unexpected.

Isolation and hopelessness come in all shapes and sizes, whether it be an ignorant staff member stirring up rumors about you, an irate parent disagreeing with your philosophy of ministry or perhaps budget cuts so bad you can’t spend a penny.  You need to hold fast and weather the storm to develop perseverance in yourself and for the sake of your ministry. There’s no denying it, you will hit one storm after another, especially in student ministry. With each storm weathered comes a victory and even victories can be disguised as hard lessons learned, all is not lost. Through it all you will become a stronger leader and a better youth pastor for your ministry and your church.

Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. – James

Every 26 seconds this happens to a high school student.

September 8, 2014 by Chris Parker Leave a Comment

stopwatch

Every year, over 1.2 million students drop out of high school in the United States alone. That’s a student every 26 seconds – or 7,000 a day.

Unbelievable. I knew the dropout rate wasn’t a pretty number. But wow! These students have been part of a system their entire life (public education system) and then in the blink of an eye, just a few years or months shy of graduation they surrender by throwing their hands in the air and give a defeated, “I’m out.”

Why are they dropping out? How do we keep them more engaged? Is their success or future in danger because of the decision made? Do we completely blame the student or is this a parenting problem as well?

I know there are plenty of answers and perspectives taken on this, but I wanted to be one of many to bring awareness to this situation. You can’t stop 7,000 students from dropping out each day, but maybe you could reach out to the one in your sphere of influence that is thinking about it or struggling with an issue that could give them the excuse to drop out.

Graduating high school is an accomplishment. Be a positive and encouraging voice to these young people, it may go farther than you think.

7 ways to prime your ministry.

August 31, 2014 by Chris Parker Leave a Comment

?????????????????? Just like priming the pump for my old rusty lawn mower before I get it started, you and I both have some things we could do to prime the pump of our ministry before the school year gets underway. When you don’t prime the pump you could be putting yourself and your ministry into deep weeds that could have been avoided.

WARNING: Now is the easiest time to fall into bad habits, make careless leadership decisions, and be totally side swiped by some amazing and not so amazing opportunities. What you do now at the beginning of a school year will dramatically impact the kind of year you have. Do these 7 things now to prime your ministry and you will be set up for a win!

  1. Calendar out your curriculum and teaching schedule. Spend a few hours with those that help your ministry operate, whether it be staff or volunteers. Get everyone in a room and say, “We will not leave this room until we have every Sunday covered until Christmas.” It may seem brutal, but you will thank me later. Having a game plan for the the next 4 months will save tons of time you would waste in the next few months “trying to figure out” what you will do next.
  2. Have a big camp/retreat this fall or winter? Start registration now. For my students we do a winter camp. Though it’s in January we opened registration this weekend! Why? Because I want as many students at camp as possible. This maximizes promotion time and allows families to plan both financially and ample time to put it on the family calendar. Upon first day of registration this year we had 180 kids/students pre-register…that’s 75% of numbers from last year. I’m not at all worried about getting enough people to camp. We will most likely be at or over camp capacity this year.  This also gives visiting students or new guests something to look forward to more than Sunday mornings. When they see everyone is doing it and they sign up…well, the chances of you retaining this visitor is high!
  3. Map out your budget according to your goals. This seems simple in theory, yet many opportunities will pull at your ministry wallet this year. If meeting your goals is the most important thing, then budget for them not against them. This year I’m really trying to grow the high school program, I will be spending a lot of my budget on this.
  4. Give away more leadership to those that have earned it. You can’t do it all, and don’t pretend you can. One of the best things you can do as a leader is figuring out what is on your plate that you could give away while at the same time empowering someone else. It doesn’t matter whether they are a staff member or a small group leader. Target those that are high-capacity “doers” and trust that they could do a better job than you!
  5. Develop a WIN calendar. Each week I give my small group leaders a win. Each week the win is different and revolves around connecting with students, engaging the parents, developing sticky community. These wins are small and tangible, if the small group leader follows through they know that they have won that week! For example: The win for this week is to put on the calendar an outing for your small group that isn’t on Sunday, communicate it to their parents.
  6. Meet the parents. This could be one of the most important ways to prime your ministry for success. If you have parents on board with what you are doing there is little you can’t accomplish. We just had a BBQ after church last week for all parents that attend and have children birth-College. Over 800 people showed up to eat food and hear the vision for our NextGen ministry this year. Most importantly though, each parent had the opportunity to meet the child’s small group leader that would be in that child’s life every Sunday this year. If you don’t do something like this, you need to figure out how to make it happen, it’s one of the most important things we do.
  7. Get Prime! This may sound silly but I can’t tell you how much of a time and money saver this is for my ministry. If I need game supplies, stage props, materials for camp, gifts for small group leaders, etc. this is the first place I stop. With an Amazon Prime membership I get almost everything in 2-free day shipping plus access to millions of songs with ad-free streaming. I’d argue Amazon Prime pays for itself in just the first few weeks you use it. It’s funny, almost every Wednesday I ask myself, “Is there anything I need for Sunday?” If so, it’s just as easy as jumping online, a few clicks and boom! Done. No trips to the local grocery store or dollar store, I’m done. This could be the most resourceful and responsible $99 you spend for your ministry.

Stop doing it all!

July 16, 2014 by Chris Parker Leave a Comment

A student ministry is not a student ministry until students start doing the ministry.

It was this philosophy of ministry that my youth pastor had. When he gave away leadership to me, I inherited numerous tasks and responsibilities. Through developmental leadership over the years I now find myself in the place of needing to give my leadership away to others.

What is holding back your ministry from growing deeper spiritually, growing bigger in numbers and overall richer in leadership? It’s probably your lack of empowering others, giving away responsibilities and allowing students to do the ministry that they are capable of doing. When a student has that “Aha!” moment and realizes that they are just as capable to minister to others like the youth pastor, they begin to look at their student ministry through a different lens. The student begins to own the ministry and operate not merely as an attender but as a contributor.

How do you empower your students?

Look over your weekly responsibilities, find tasks you can give to your students so that they have the opportunity to step up and do the ministry they are capable of doing.

This week we have students and kids serving both stateside and international. This is so cool to see 3rd graders all the way up through graduated seniors taking the love of Jesus to many around the world, it’s one of my favorite seasons of the year. I’ll be going to Haiti, leaving here in a few hours. A really neat last minute surprise, my dad will be going on the trip with me! Stay updated on all our trips by following our picture blog HERE!

Kearning is very important. More about logo design.

May 29, 2014 by Chris Parker Leave a Comment

new google

If  you were to speak with anyone that knows me pretty well, they would probably tell you that I strive for excellence and am very particular about how things look, almost to the point of annoyance. Currently I have a design contest running for a NextGen logo. With hundreds of designs being submitted, I am sometimes shocked and even taken back to see what some people would submit. At the very least, let’s get the kearning right. So, what is kearning? I’m so glad you asked and yes it is very important with any design. It’s a fancy word for appropriate spacing.

Did you know GOOGLE changed it’s logo this past weekend, and you didn’t even notice? Not until now.

When you are branding or coming up with a new logo get all the feedback that you can. Email it out, print it and hang it up in your program/office space, ask people both inside and outside the church to vote on a few different options.
